Location: Allagadda Mandal, Nandyal District, Andhra Pradesh
Significance: The center of the Nava Narasimha Kshetram
Geography: Split into Lower Ahobilam (Diguva Ahobilam) and Upper Ahobilam (Eguva Ahobilam)
The story of Ahobilam is as ancient as time itself. According to the Puranas, this is the exact location of the palace of the demon king Hiranyakashipu. It is here that the Ugra Stambham (the pillar) still stands, from which Lord Narasimha emerged in a terrifying form to slay the demon and restore Dharma.
The name "Ahobilam" has two divine meanings. Some say it comes from "Aho Bilam" (Oh, what a cave!), an exclamation made by the Garuda when he saw the Lord in the mountain cave. Others believe it stems from "Aho Balam" (Oh, what strength!), referring to the unmatched power of the Narasimha Avatar.
The temple complex is unique because the entire Nallamala mountain range is visualized as Adisesha (the serpent couch of Vishnu), with Ahobilam resting at the center of the serpent’s hood. Over the centuries, the temple was patronized by the Chalukyas, Cholas, and most significantly, the Vijayanagara Kings, who added the magnificent mandapams and intricate carvings that stand today.
For the spiritual seeker, Ahobilam is a test of faith. To visit all nine temples—Ahobila, Kroda, Jwala, Malola, Yogananda, Chatravata, Pavana, Bhargava, and Karanja—one must trek through dense forests, cross mountain streams, and climb rocky terrains. It is a physical and spiritual odyssey that connects the devotee directly with the divine energy of the Earth.
Visiting all nine Narasimha temples in one trip removes all planetary doshas.
The dust of Ahobilam is sacred, as it was touched by the feet of the Lord himself.
Offering prayers at the Jwala Narasimha site (the exact spot of the demon's slaying) grants victory over enemies and internal fears
Note: Lower Ahobilam is easily accessible, while Upper Ahobilam and the forest temples involve trekking and may close earlier for safety.

Is it difficult to trek to all nine temples?
Some temples (Lower and Upper Ahobila, Karanja) are easy to reach. Others like Jwala and Pavana require a moderate to difficult trek through forest paths.
Can we visit all nine temples in one day?
It is physically demanding. While a very early start can cover most, a 2-day trip is recommended to experience all nine temples peacefully.
Are there wild animals in the forest?
Ahobilam is part of the Nallamala forest reserve. While sightings are rare on the main paths, it is mandatory to finish forest treks before sunset.
What is the significance of the Jwala Narasimha Temple?
This is believed to be the exact spot where the Lord's anger was at its peak. The water in the nearby "Raktha Kunda" is said to have turned red from the blood of the demon.
What should I wear for the visit?
Wear comfortable, traditional Indian clothing. For the treks, ensure you have footwear with a good grip (though many devotees trek barefoot out of respect).
Is there an age limit for the trek?
There is no limit, but elderly people or those with knee issues may find the climb to Upper Ahobilam and Jwala Narasimha challenging. Dolis (palanquins) are available for hire.
Plan your journey to the heart of the Nallamala Hills. May the strength of Lord Narasimha guide your path!
