The Story of Amaralingeswara Swamy – The Divine Protector of Amaravathi

The story of Amaralingeswara Swamy is a captivating blend of celestial battles and divine intervention. According to the Puranas, during the Tarakasura Vadha, the powerful demon Tarakasura held a divine Shiva Lingam in his throat, which made him invincible. When Lord Kartikeya finally shattered the Lingam into five pieces, they fell at five different locations across Andhra Pradesh. These spots became the Pancharama Kshetras.

The piece that fell at Amaravathi grew rapidly toward the sky. To stop its growth, the celestial gods (Devas), led by Lord Indra, installed it here. It is said that Indra himself established the temple, which is why the Lord is called Amaralingeswara (Lord of the Immortals).

The temple's architecture is unique; the Shiva Lingam is so tall that the priests must climb a pedestal to perform the Abhishekam. Another fascinating feature is the mysterious red stain at the top of the Lingam. Legend says that when the Lingam was growing uncontrollably, a nail was driven into the top to stop it, causing it to "bleed"—a mark that remains visible to this day.

As the capital of the ancient Satavahana dynasty, the temple reflects centuries of royal patronage and architectural evolution. Today, it stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the eternal power of Mahadev.

Devotees believe that:

  • A dip in the Krishna River before darshan washes away mortal sins.
  • Worshipping here grants longevity and "Amrutatva" (immortality of the soul).
  • Performing Abhishekam to the 15ft Lingam brings immense mental peace and clarity.
