The Story of Ambaji Temple – The Eternal Abode of the Mother Goddess

The story of Ambaji Temple is woven into the very fabric of ancient Vedic history. It is recognized as one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. According to the Puranas, when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava with the charred body of Sati, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember the body to calm Shiva. It is believed that the heart of Goddess Sati fell here in the Arasur hills.

What makes Ambaji truly mystical is the absence of an image or idol. The main object of worship is the Gokh, a wall niche containing the Vishwa Yantra. This Yantra represents the formless, all-pervading energy of the Goddess. Priests decorate the Yantra in a way that, from a distance, it appears as if the Goddess is seated in her full glory, draped in traditional Gujarati attire.

The temple is also deeply connected to the Ramayana. It is said that Lord Rama and Lakshmana visited the Arasur hills in search of Sita and were blessed by Maa Ambe with a divine arrow (Ajay) that helped Rama defeat Ravana.

The present temple structure is a masterpiece of white marble with gold-plated spires (Shikhars). The temple complex radiates an aura of peace and power, especially during the Bhadrapadi Purnima, when a massive fair is held, and thousands of pilgrims walk hundreds of kilometers on foot to pay their respects.

Devotees believe that:

  • A visit to Ambaji fulfills the deepest desires of the heart.
  • Worshipping the Yantra brings immense mental peace and spiritual strength.
  • The Akhand Jyot (eternal lamp) at Gabbar Hill provides divine light to one’s life.
