The history of the Bhimashankar Temple is a fierce tale of divine wrath and ultimate protection. According to the Shiva Purana, an incredibly powerful demon named Tripurasura had performed severe penance to appease Lord Brahma, gaining a boon that made him almost invincible in his three flying cities (Tripura).
Drunk on power, Tripurasura began tormenting sages, humans, and even the Devas. When the universe could no longer bear his tyranny, the gods pleaded with Lord Shiva for salvation. In his most ferocious form as Tripurantaka, Shiva descended upon the Sahyadri hills. After a massive, apocalyptic battle, Shiva unleashed his divine weapon and incinerated the three cities, destroying the demon.
The intense heat of the battle caused Shiva to sweat profusely. The gods requested him to rest, and his divine sweat transformed into the holy Bhima River. Pleased by the prayers of the sages, Shiva decided to reside there eternally in the form of a Jyotirlinga, taking the name Bhimashankar.
Understanding this divine history transforms your visit into a deeply emotional pilgrimage. When you bow before the Jyotirlinga here, you are surrendering to the ultimate protector against evil.
