The story of Chamundeshwari Temple is a powerful saga of divine intervention and victory. According to ancient Puranas, the area was once terrorized by the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura. Unable to bear his tyranny, the gods channeled their collective energy to create Goddess Chamundeshwari. After a fierce battle on these very hills, the Goddess slayed the demon, earning the name "Mahishasura Mardini."
The temple's history is deeply intertwined with the Wodeyar Dynasty of Mysuru. For centuries, the Maharajas of Mysore have worshipped Chamundeshwari as their family deity (Kula Devata). In 1827, Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III extensively renovated the temple and gifted the magnificent seven-tier Gopuram (pyramidal tower) that dominates the skyline today.
Architecturally, the temple is a stunning example of the Dravidian style. As you ascend the hills—whether by road or by climbing the 1,008 ancient stone steps—you encounter the massive 16-foot monolithic statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull, which stands as a silent guardian halfway up the hill.
Today, the temple is the focal point of the world-famous Mysuru Dasara festival. The idol of the Goddess is carried in a golden howdah atop a decorated elephant, a tradition that showcases the deep-rooted faith and royal grandeur of Karnataka.
