The Story of Kanaka Durga Temple – The Guardian of Indrakeeladri

The history of the Kanaka Durga Temple is a mesmerizing blend of Vedic legend and historical resilience. According to the Puranas, the hill on which the temple stands, Indrakeeladri, owes its name to Sage Indrakila. After performing intense penance, the sage requested the Goddess to reside on his head to keep a vigil over wicked demons. Granting his wish, the Goddess made the hill her permanent abode.

Another powerful legend tells of the Goddess’s triumph over the demon king Mahishasura. It is believed she took a fierce form to slay the buffalo demon, freeing the people of Vijayawada from his reign of terror. This victory is why she is worshipped here as Mahishasura Mardini, the slayer of Mahishasura.

The temple is also deeply connected to Arjuna, the Pandava prince. It is said that Arjuna performed severe penance on this very hill to appease Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva appeared as a hunter (Kirata) and granted him the Pasupata Astra, a divine weapon.

Devotees believe that:

  • A holy dip in the River Krishna before darshan purifies the soul.
  • The Goddess at Indrakeeladri is Swayambhu (self-manifested) and extremely powerful.
  • Offering a Saree (Chadhava) to the Mother brings prosperity and protection to the family.
