The Story of Karni Mata Temple – The Miracle of the Kabbas

The history of the Karni Mata Temple is a mesmerizing tale of divine intervention and motherly love. Karni Mata, a highly revered Hindu warrior sage born in the 14th century, is worshipped as the direct incarnation of Goddess Durga.

According to ancient legend, her stepson Laxman drowned while attempting to drink water from the Kapil Sarovar. Deeply grieving, Karni Mata implored Yama, the God of Death, to restore his life. Yama initially refused, stating that the boy's soul had already been assigned a new body. Enraged, Karni Mata vowed that none of her descendants (the Charan caste) would ever fall under Yama's jurisdiction again. Instead, upon death, they would temporarily reincarnate as rats in her temple, and when a rat dies, it is reborn as a human in the Charan community.

Today, these rats are treated with utmost reverence. Devotees consider it a supreme blessing if a rat runs across their feet. Spotting one of the rare white rats is believed to bring immediate fulfillment of the deepest desires and immense prosperity.

Understanding this divine history transforms your visit into a deeply emotional pilgrimage. You are witnessing a sanctuary where the boundaries between life, death, and devotion blur into absolute faith.
