The history of the Konark Sun Temple is a brilliant fusion of science, art, and profound devotion. Built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, the temple was designed to celebrate royal triumphs and honor the Sun God.
The entire complex was conceived as the colossal chariot of Surya, the Sun God. The 24 wheels carved into the base represent the hours of the day (or the 12 months of the year, depending on interpretation), and the 7 horses pulling the chariot represent the days of the week. Remarkably, the temple was constructed so that the first rays of the rising sun would strike the principal entrance, illuminating the sanctum.
Legend has it that the temple originally contained a massive lodestone (a natural magnet) at the top, which caused the main idol of the Sun God to levitate in mid-air. While the main sanctum (Vimana) collapsed centuries ago due to structural issues and invasions, the surviving audience hall (Jagamohana) remains a masterpiece covered in thousands of exquisite sculptures depicting life, love, and mythology.
Understanding this extraordinary history transforms your visit from a simple sightseeing trip into a deeply enriching journey through ancient Indian ingenuity.

The temple is located in the coastal town of Konark, approximately 35 kilometers from Puri and 65 kilometers from Bhubaneswar in Odisha.
Why is Konark famous?
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site globally renowned for its colossal chariot architecture, the precision of its sundial wheels, and the incredible intricacy of its stone carvings.

No. The main sanctum collapsed centuries ago, and the surviving structure (the Jagamohana) is preserved as a historical monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Regular worship is not performed here.
Is there an entry fee for Konark?
Yes. Since it is a protected ASI monument, there is a nominal entry fee for Indian citizens and a different fee structure for foreign nationals.
What is the dress code for Konark?
Because it is a historical monument and not an active temple, there is no strict religious dress code. However, comfortable walking shoes and light, modest clothing are highly recommended due to the extensive outdoor walking and coastal heat.
