Lotus Temple – Quick Info

  • Location: Kalkaji, New Delhi, Delhi
  • Affiliation: Bahá'í Faith (Bahá'í House of Worship)
  • Significance: A global symbol of unity, peace, and meditation; one of the most visited buildings in the world.
  • Architecture: Designed by Fariborz Sahba, featuring 27 free-standing marble-clad "petals" arranged to form a blooming lotus flower.

The Story of the Lotus Temple – A Symbol of Universal Unity

The story of the Lotus Temple is a modern architectural and spiritual marvel. Consecrated in 1986, it was built to reflect the core principle of the Bahá'í Faith: the oneness of God, the oneness of religion, and the oneness of humanity.

The architect, Fariborz Sahba, chose the lotus flower because it is a sacred symbol shared by Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Islam. Emerging from muddy waters to bloom in absolute purity, the lotus represents the manifestation of God and the purity of the human soul. The temple is built using pristine white marble sourced from the Penteli mountain in Greece.

Unlike traditional temples, the Lotus Temple has no idols, no altars, and no sermons. There are no religious rituals performed inside. Instead, it offers a vast, echoing hall where up to 2,500 people can sit together in absolute silence, praying or meditating according to their own beliefs.

Understanding this philosophy transforms your visit into a deeply moving experience. When you enter the Lotus Temple, you are stepping into a universal sanctuary of peace, leaving behind all worldly divisions.
