The history of the Rameswaram Temple is a profound testament to the deep devotion between Lord Rama and Lord Shiva. According to the epic Ramayana, after defeating the demon king Ravana (who was a Brahmin), Lord Rama sought to absolve himself of Brahmahatya (the sin of killing a Brahmin).
To seek forgiveness, Lord Rama decided to pray to Lord Shiva. He dispatched Lord Hanuman to bring a Shivalingam from the Himalayas. However, when Hanuman was delayed, Goddess Sita lovingly crafted a Lingam out of the sea sand. This Lingam, worshipped by Lord Rama himself, is the presiding deity—the Ramalingam. When Hanuman returned, the Lingam he brought (Vishwalingam) was also installed, and Lord Rama decreed that it must be worshipped first, a tradition that continues to this day.
Before entering the main temple, devotees traditionally take a purifying dip in the sea at Agni Teertham, followed by bathing in the 22 holy wells (Teerthams) located inside the temple complex. These wells are said to represent the 22 arrows in Lord Rama’s quiver.
Understanding this divine history transforms your visit into a deeply emotional pilgrimage. You are praying at the exact spot where the Avatar of Vishnu bowed to the Supreme Lord Shiva.
