The Story of Ranganathaswamy Temple – The Lord Who Chose Srirangam

The history of the Ranganathaswamy Temple is deeply rooted in the epic Ramayana. According to ancient scriptures, the idol of Lord Ranganatha was originally worshipped by Lord Rama in Ayodhya. After his victory over Ravana, Rama gifted this supreme idol to the noble demon king Vibhishana of Sri Lanka.

While carrying the idol back to his kingdom, Vibhishana stopped to rest at the tranquil island of Srirangam and placed the deity on the ground. When he tried to lift it again, the idol was firmly rooted to the earth. Lord Ranganatha then revealed that He desired to stay in Srirangam, facing south toward Sri Lanka to eternally bless Vibhishana.

The temple expanded over centuries under the patronage of the Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, and Vijayanagara kings. Today, the complex is a city within a city, boasting seven Prakarams (concentric walled enclosures) representing the seven spiritual centers of the human body, and the towering 236-feet Rajagopuram, the tallest temple tower in Asia.

Understanding this divine history transforms your visit into a deeply emotional pilgrimage. You are walking through centuries of devotion to reach the ultimate resting place of the preserver of the universe.
