The name Srikalahasti is derived from three animals: Sri (Spider), Kala (Snake), and Hasti (Elephant). According to legend, these three creatures worshipped Lord Shiva here with immense devotion. The spider wove a web to protect the Lingam, the snake placed a gem upon it, and the elephant washed it with water from the river. Pleased by their selfless devotion, Lord Shiva granted them liberation and merged their names into the sacred site.
Srikalahasti is also famously associated with Bhakt Kannappa, a tribal devotee who offered his own eyes to the Lord. His extreme sacrifice remains a testament to the temple’s deep-rooted legacy of "Bhakti" (devotion) over ritualistic perfection.
The temple is an architectural marvel, featuring a massive Gopuram and a main shrine carved into the side of a hill. Interestingly, despite being an indoor sanctum without windows, a flickering lamp (Deepa) near the main Lingam constantly wavers, signifying the presence of Vayu (the Wind God).
