The history of Yamunotri Temple is deeply woven into the emotional fabric of Hindu mythology. According to the ancient Puranas, Goddess Yamuna is the daughter of Surya (the Sun God) and Sangya, and the beloved sister of Yama (the God of Death).
It is believed that Yama promised his sister that anyone who bathes in the holy waters of the Yamuna River would be spared from a painful death and the torments of Yamalok (the underworld). Because of this profound blessing, millions of devotees trek the steep Himalayan paths, seeking salvation and long life for their families.
The original temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gurkha commander, in the 19th century, and was later rebuilt by the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal, Maharaja Pratap Shah. Before entering the main temple, devotees first pay their respects to Divya Shila, a divine rock pillar, and dip raw rice into Surya Kund (a boiling natural hot spring) to take home as sacred Prasadam.
Understanding this divine history transforms a challenging trek into a journey of deep love and devotion. When you visit Yamunotri, you are washing away your earthly fears and connecting with a maternal, protective energy.
